How it works

  1. 1

Add a DRM-free EPUB file from your device.

  2. 2

DocuVocal reads the chapters in the order set by the book.

  3. 3

Press play and follow along, or let it run while you do something else.

Your ebooks, read aloud in order

An EPUB is a bundle of chapter files plus a reading order. DocuVocal follows that order exactly, keeps chapter headings, and turns every paragraph into clean sentences that are easy to follow by ear. Front matter is read as it appears in the book, so you can skip ahead with the paragraph buttons.

Pick the right voice for fiction and non-fiction

The natural voice is the best choice for long chapters. It downloads once and then starts quickly every time. If you prefer, use any voice already installed in your browser; many systems include several accents. Speed goes from 0.5× to 3×.

What the free reader covers

The free reader plays about the first 125,000 characters of a book, roughly fifty printed pages, and shows a notice when a book is longer. Whole-book listening is coming with the DocuVocal Library.

Good books to start with

Thousands of classics are free and DRM-free as EPUB files from public-domain libraries such as Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks. Non-fiction, essays and textbooks you own as DRM-free EPUB also work well, because their clear chapter structure makes it easy to jump between sections. Self-published authors can listen to their own manuscript exports to check the pacing of a chapter before it goes to an editor.

Questions

Which EPUB files can I open?

DRM-free EPUB files, such as books you bought from DRM-free stores, public-domain classics, or your own exported manuscripts. Files locked with DRM cannot be opened by any third-party reader, including DocuVocal.

Can I turn an EPUB into an audiobook file?

That is exactly what the DocuVocal Library will do: convert the whole book into an audiobook you keep, as an M4B with chapter markers or MP3 files, and keep your place across devices. Join early access to try it first.

Are chapter titles read out?

Yes. Chapter and section headings are kept and read before the text that follows, so you always know where you are in the book.

Does it work with MOBI or AZW files?

Not yet. Convert the book to EPUB with a free tool such as Calibre, then open the EPUB here.
